Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?

According to the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario’s (CMTO) Standards of Practice, “The practice of Massage Therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain.” (Massage Therapy Act, 1991)  Massage therapy treatments are used in many ways such as acute and chronic conditions, injury rehabilitation and even certain illnesses and disabilities.

Why choose a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?

In Ontario an RMT is a primary healthcare provider that has gone through an extensive recognized 2-3 year massage therapy program that includes a minimum of 2200 hours of formal educational training.  They have passed competency examinations to ensure the delivery of safe and effective treatments and must participate in the CMTO’s Quality Assurance Program to maintain a high level of education and professional standards.  Many extended health benefits plans offer reimbursements for treatments from an RMT.

What’s involved?

Treatments vary depending on an individual’s unique circumstance, but typically you can expect to be clothed or unclothed to your comfort level, lying on a treatment table between sheets with only the specific areas of the body being worked on uncovered.  The treatment plan that was discussed and agreed upon during your assessment is carried out.  A massage therapist uses specific hands-on techniques to manipulate the body’s soft tissues to create the desired effect.
